FOUNDER

Marissa Clarke

My name is Marissa Clarke and I am the founder of Women in Brass and it is with the greatest of pleasure and pride that I can present the second ever ‘Women In Brass’ concert here in Huntingtower Performing Arts Centre.

My passion for Brass Bands started at a very young age with involvement in my local Band - Redcliffe RSL Brass Band. This early immersion in community music led to graduating from Queensland Conservatorium, then gaining a Graduate Diploma in Education, and now a career in Music Administration, instrument sales, and collaborative projects involving education establishments and professional organisations.

Throughout my career and from very early on, I have been inspired by women who have grown in confidence, independence and voice through music, and I have been guided by those same women who now occupy whatever seat they deserve in the bandroom. It wasn’t so long ago that women were not allowed in the band room, unless in charge of sandwiches or raffle prizes of course.

I am humbled and proud of our grit, heritage and determination. Women all over the world are breaking down barriers in society including music, and ‘Women in Brass’ is testament to a particular breed of feminine dedication and womanly passion for what we do. WIB’s goal is to encourage each other, whilst empowering more young girls to find their place in their community and to find their support system, be it in music, sport or any activity for that matter.
